Vacant VicTrack land becomes thriving dog park

1 October 2025

Tongala’s dogs have a new place to play following the opening of an off-leash dog park on land made available through a VicTrack community lease

The park, which officially opened to the public in September, is the only designated off-leash dog park in Tongala, around 225 kilometres north of Melbourne, providing a contained space where dogs can run freely, socialise and play in a safe environment.

The dog park was created after land was leased to Campaspe Shire Council through one of more than 400 community leases that make underused transport land available to community organisations for recreational, cultural or social programs.

“This is great outcome to see previously vacant land become a thriving dog park for the Tongala community,” VicTrack Community Leasing Senior Specialist Vicki Evans said.

Vicki guided the council through the application process after the site was identified as a suitable location for a dog park – something Tongala residents had requested in community consultation on place-based plans.

“This is great outcome to see previously vacant land become a thriving dog park for the Tongala community.”

“We are always pleased to see underused land transformed to bring benefits to communities, and we hope the dog park becomes a treasured space for Tongala locals and their canine companions,” Vicki said.

Campaspe Shire Council Project Manager, Mick Mahady who delivered the project said dog parks can benefit people and pets.

“For people, dog parks serve as communal spaces where neighbours can interact, fostering a sense of community,” he said.

“Both dogs and their owners get more exercise, which can lead to healthier lifestyles, and spending time with pets and other dog lovers can reduce stress and improve overall happiness.

“This is Tongala’s only designated off-leash dog park, so it is filling the off-leash gap that previously existed.

“There are a considerable number of dogs in the Tongala community, and we expect the park to be well used.”

Tongala Dog Park is located at Brose Reserve, Finlay Road, Tongala.
