Fifty-three community groups are sharing more than $500,000 in funding from the Victorian Government, following a second round of VicTrack’s Community Grants Program.
The groups lease rail land, buildings, and other assets from VicTrack for community purposes, and will use the funds to complete small maintenance projects such as painting, gardening or landscaping, or to help them meet heritage and environmental obligations.
Applications for the grants were opened in August 2024. Following an assessment process, 39 VicTrack community tenants were awarded up to $10,000 each ($309,00 in total) and 14 tourist and heritage rail groups received a total of $202,000.
VicTrack contributed $200,000 of the grants funding, with a further $300,000 coming from Department of Transport and Planning through the Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program.
“VicTrack’s community tenants provide community and cultural services and programs that benefit communities all over Victoria, and they do wonderful work supporting their local communities,” Mirella Zeait, VicTrack’s Group Manager Property Management said.
“We’re delighted to provide this funding to help groups complete small projects and I look forward to seeing these latest projects come to fruition.”
Community Grants Program
The Community Grants Program was launched in 2023 to support groups with managing their community spaces leased from VicTrack, which include public open spaces, art galleries, museums, tourist railways, creative spaces, and community hubs.
Community leases
VicTrack makes underused land and buildings available to community organisations through its community leasing program. It charges groups an affordable rent, which is significantly reduced compared to a commercial rental rate.
