More funding for VicTrack community tenants

13 August 2024

Not-for-profit groups that lease rail land, buildings and other assets from VicTrack for community purposes are once again being offered the chance to apply for grants from the Victorian Government, to help them with small projects.

VicTrack’s Community Grants Program is offering a total of $500,000 in funding to community groups and tourist and heritage railway organisations that have community leases with VicTrack, or who lease VicTrack assets from their local council.

Now in its second year, the Community Grants Program makes funding available to groups to support them with managing their community assets. Funding can be used for refurbishing buildings, land, or other assets leased from VicTrack, which could include carrying out painting, gardening, landscaping or other small projects.

As many groups are subject to environmental and heritage regulations relating to the assets they lease, they can also use the grants to help them meet these obligations.

How to apply

Groups can apply for the grants through the VicTrack website and applications are open for six weeks.

Applications will be assessed by VicTrack and the Department of Transport and Planning, and it is expected that the grants will be released later this year.

VicTrack makes underused land and buildings available to community organisations through its community leasing program. Community tenants pay an affordable rent, which is significantly reduced compared to a commercial rental rate.

Community leases support a range of groups and activities including public open spaces, art galleries, museums, libraries, tourist and heritage railways, creative spaces, and community hubs.

The first round of funding last year awarded more than half a million dollars to 66 not-for-profit groups that lease land, buildings and other assets from VicTrack.

Groups that received funds in the first round of the Community Grants Program are welcome to apply for further funding to help them continue the valuable work they do.
